When I was a young Chef in the Royal Navy back in 1997, I stumbled across a book by Debbie Brown that opened my eyes to the amazing world of cake decorating! The book was ‘FairyTale Cakes’ and what I saw inside was just unbelievable. Full of truly awesome cakes and it even had the techniques laid out step by step showing how to make them. After that, I bought nearly all the Debbie Brown Cake Books I could find.
My Passion Was Born
I knew then that I had to make novelty cakes and my passion for cake decorating began. Debbie Brown’s cake are fun, colourful, quirky and full of life. She focusses on cartoons and novelty cakes rather than the traditional wedding cakes so this was perfect for me as I have always loved to draw cartoons. Before I found Debbie’s books I had been making sugar flowers and icing bears, nothing like her modern cakes.
Since then, I have made lots of cakes from her books including Tom & Jerry and Bugs Bunny among many others. You have probably seen the cake where bugs bunny is coming out of a pile of carrots? Well, this is Debbie’s design and her cakes have been replicated by many cake makers for years.
I can honestly say that Debbie Brown’s books taught me the basic techniques for making novelty cartoon cakes and these techniques I still use today.
Included below is a large selection of Debbie Brown’s books so you can have a good look through and see for yourself why I regard her and her work so highly. The links take you to Amazon and you can use the ‘Look Inside’ option to browse through a few pages of each of the books.
You can also find them in our Shop section.
If you have found Debbie to be a great teacher too, then please let me know on Facebook or Twitter and share any pics if you have made any of her cakes. Let me know what you think of the books too.
